Western Sydney Give Us The Blues |
Western Sydney Give Us The Blues |
There was no ranting or raving from head coach Sam Lane following our surprise 27-19 loss to the Western Sydney Two Blues last Saturday. Sammy's got a blow-up in him if necessary, but this wasn't the time for it. The Marlins knew they were poor and a spray wasn't required. But that's not to say Lane held back as he dissected how it all went wrong. The truth is we never really got out of first gear against a more enthusiastic side, trailing 14-0 early before fighting back to be just two behind at the break. The Two Blues simply kicked again, controlling the second half to shut down the game and leave us 0-2 after two rounds. The loss ended our 18-game winning run against the Two Blues, a record stretching way back to 2013. "Not to take anything away from Two Blues - they deserved to win - but we were so far from where we needed to be with our discipline, accuracy at breakdown and then we lost the territory and possession battle off the back of that," a clearly disappointed Lane said. "The good thing is that it’s pretty obvious where we need to improve - it’s whether we can get on top of it quickly. "There are 16 rounds to go and we knew we were going to be building into it, but we’ve got to try and speed that process up a bit by working hard and sticking at it." Southern Districts at Forshaw Rugby Park on Saturday becomes a must-win game for the Marlins. The coach has made several changes to his line-up in a bid to strike the right combination, with the changes spread equally between the forwards and backline. Lane said: "There's no point having good depth if we don’t use guys that are putting their hands up. "We need our top team to put together a performance that grows some belief and confidence. "Souths are a proud club and always seem to lift a level when playing at home. It’s always a tough day there and we need to be at our best." In the lowers, we remain undefeated in all grades after two rounds. Our Colts sides are also unbeaten, meaning we've have won 11 of 13 games across the men's program. |

For those who can’t get to Forshaw, there will be a full program of Colts rugby at Manly Oval on Saturday. All three grades will be in action against Southern Districts - and it promises to be a fiery afternoon. There is no love lost between the clubs after words were exchanged after some player movement over the summer. "Let's just say we're expecting a very physical approach from Souths and we have to be ready to meet it," Manly coach Ed Morgan said. "Things have got a little nasty and words have been said and there's no doubt they will be out to bash us." Our boys are undefeated in all three grades after two rounds, with 1s sitting equal top of the table after wins over Norths and the Two Blues. But Morgan, who recently became a father for the second time, is still not fully satisfied. He said: "Two from two is obviously good but it’s not the defensive start we were looking for. "If you look at Gordon, who are top of the ladder after playing the same two teams as us, their points difference is 100 points better. "They have only conceded seven points to our 28. We've got to continue to turn up and not drift in and out of games." Thirds will get things going against Souths from 12.20pm with seconds (1.35pm) and firsts (3pm) to follow. The Manly Oval BBQ and bar will be in full swing. |

At 1:15 pm at a suburban park in Chatswood last Saturday, history was made when Manly ran out a division two women's team for the first time. After just one year back in the 15-a-side competition, the success and interest in our program was such that we had enough players to fill two sides and the Mermaids Blue were born. Coached by Calyn Parkinson and led on-field by Brooke Bosland, the girls introduced themselves to the competition with a resounding 49-0 win over Gordon. Mermaids head coach Ben Tuipulotu could not wipe the smile from his face. "A few people thought we might be too ambitious trying to get a second team together after just one year of the women's XV program," he said. "But this shows the depth, talent and interest is there. We want to make this the best women's program in the country and this was an important step." The Mermaids first XV then stepped up to beat the Two Blues 30-12 later in the day, capping a great round one performance. Ben added: "The strength of the team lies in the connection of the players off and on the field – culture. "We get that right and things fall into place." The first division girls are back in action Thursday night, meeting the Rebels at Forshaw Rugby Park from 8pm. |

It’s no secret beer and rugby go hand in hand. And, as we found out last derby day, you guys are particularly fond of it on April 25 So, to avoid being known as the club with no beer, we’ve upped our order this year to cater for the thirsty masses at Friday week's big Manly Oval local derby.
Around 1,000 slabs have been forklifted in, catering for drinkers of all tastes.
We'll have Buckettys, Great Northern, Carlton Draught, wine, seltzers, ginger beer, cider, water, and soft drink available at different points of the ground.
There will be an increased number of drink stations and food outlets - card over cash to speed up service.
We will also open the gate behind the grandstand for express members' entry.
Colts will kick things off with three games on Thursday night before we return the next day from 9.30am for four men's games, separated by the women's Mermaids v Rats clash at noon.
We'll have a more detailed rundown on the Anzac Day ceremony in next week's edition, including a big reveal involving Marlins life member and Vietnam veteran, Sean Rout.
Of course, you'll need a ticket to get into the game, and that process is one click away... |

As mentioned above, not long now until the biggest day in the Shute Shield regular season – the Anzac Day local derby at Manly Oval. And to help ensure we hit the Rats between the eyes with as much red and blue as we can, limited-edition Marlin Army T-shirts (modelled above by Manly tragic Matt Lumsdaine) are being rolled off the production line. We will be selling the prized tees at the ground on derby day (adults $35/children $25). |

Manly's Lalakai Foketi may have collected a little slice of history during last weekend's Super Rugby clash. Playing for the Waratahs against the Chiefs at Allianz Stadium, the talented centre touched down one-handed while almost his entire body was airborne and over the sideline. It was a spectacular try and the crowd rightly went mad. But the party-poopers in the TMO suite thought otherwise, ruling Foketi had grounded the ball on the tryline and the in-goal line simultaneously. Huh……? Anyway, some good may come out of what could have been a costly call (the Waratahs went on to win the game by 7). In a move to encourage attack, there are whispers World Rugby may tweak the wording to allow simultaneous grounding of the ball in the future. May we humbly suggest they call it the Lalakai Law? |

There's been a lot of discussion behind the scenes as to which club Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii would align himself with after switching from the NRL to rugby. Even though international stars like Suaalii rarely – if ever – turn out for their club sides, they are still required to nominate a team. "Tongan Thor" – Wallabies prop Taniela Tupou – has linked with lowly West Harbour after leaving the Reds for the Waratahs. He is expected to play a role with the club's juniors and also help with sponsorship and marketing while making the odd appearance in the stands at a Shute Shield game. It's a great result for the Pirates and the competition in general. Suaalii is a proud western Sydney product and should – in an ideal world – join a club as far away from the coast as possible. In the end, he decided on Eastwood, allaying fears he would head to one of the glamour clubs in the eastern suburbs in what one official said would have been "another win for the cartel". The Woodies are well entrenched in the city's north-west these days so it seems a reasonable fit, although the Western Sydney Two Blues may beg to differ. For the record, Manly didn’t make an enquiry in the belief Suaalii should align himself with a western Sydney club. |

Back in the day when players swapped from rugby club to surf club and back again, none stood much taller than the late John Hicks. John was a life member of Manly Life Saving Club, a surf boat rower, sweep and coach who helped many rowers learn the ropes. In the winter months, he was a more than handy backrower for Manly, playing third grade in the first-ever northern beaches derby against Warringah in 1971. John was also a mover and shaker off the field, helping the club in various roles and co-ordinating the tour to New Zealand in 1971. He assisted in erecting (and funding) a temporary grandstand on the eastern side of Manly Oval in the early 2000s. He was also a prominent member of premiership-winning Manly Savers teams during the 1960s. No one had a bad word to say about "Hicksy". John succumbed to cancer late last month and was given a rousing send off by family and friends in early April. Farewell, Hicksy. |

You can add now add St George Illawarra to the list of NRL teams to use Manly Oval as a training base before taking on the Sea Eagles. Melbourne, Gold Coast and the Dolphins have all used the ground in the past before being beaten at Brookie. Manly coach Anthony Seibold, a keen Marlins fan, will be desperately hoping the jinx continues on Thursday night. |

Allez les Marlin! That's the message from this week's Manly fan abroad, Amelie from French-owned New Caledonia. Normally a rusted on All Blacks supporter, Amelie turned Marlins tragic upon being handed one of our caps by an Aussie tourist who was (unsuccessfully) stumbling around the local supermarket searching for a cheap six pack to avoid resort prices. She told Fillets: "Ils battent ces rats sales"…which more or less translates to "they will beat those dirty Rats." Merci, Amelie. And a reminder we're always on the lookout for "Marlins on the Move" photos. Send them to newsworthy@manlyrugby,com.au |
