The game after the local derby should come with an official health warning. Seven days after holding off leaders Warringah at Rat Park, the Marlins suffered a 42-35 after-the-bell home defeat to 11th placed Southern Districts last Saturday. Even after writing those words, it still doesn't seem real. We got off to a poor start, Souths were fully up for it and we weren't. We were flatter than last year's beer. It was as simple as that. The more we chased the game, the more determined the Rebels were to deny us. When the bell rang, it was 35-all with Souths deep on the attack. Armed with the penalty advantage, the visitors threw the ball right to exploit a two man overlap and score in front of the grandstand. They thoroughly deserved all five points, no risk about it. "It's tough to take. We were on such a high last week and the chat all week was about not being a bit of a roller-coaster team," Manly fullback Ollie Horne said. "It’s hard to bounce back after a derby but that's no excuse." Was complacency an issue? "No, I don't think so. Our MO is it doesn’t matter who we play, if we play at our best we can beat anyone," Horne continued. "We showed that against the top of the table last week but the reality is we didn’t play anywhere near our best in this one." Skipper Hunter Ward said: "It's not many times you score 35 points and lose a game. "It was more the effort areas where I thought we were poor…around the breakdown and kick cycle. "We were beaten in areas we shouldn’t have lost. The derby was massive but we've got to learn to back up and go again the next week. "We've got to make sure we're not going up and down coming into the finals." The Marlins sit fourth with four rounds remaining in the regular season. A bounce back against the Two Blues at Eric Tweedale Stadium on Saturday is an absolute must. |

Two of our big name rep players will pull on a Manly jersey for the first time in a long time on Saturday. Wallaby/Waratah centre Lalakai Foketi and Tahs prop Hayden Thompson-Stringer have both been cleared to play against the Two Blues in a massive boost to our premiership hopes. Foketi hasn't played for the Marlins for more than a year while HTS's last appearance in the red and blue was eight years ago. It's great to see rep talent filtering back to the Shute Shield. Thompson-Stringer, a former England under-20 rep, told us: "The last time I put the Manly jersey on was in 2016. I’ve been lucky enough to be part of some great teams at Saracens, Brive and La Rochelle since. "I'm excited to be back at Manly and very much looking forward to Saturday's game." Go well, boys. |

It wasn't the result Byron Leach was hoping for to mark his 100th – and possibly last (for a while) – appearance in a Manly jumper. But the big lock still left for London a happy man this week after a memorable afternoon at the Village Green last Saturday. Family and friends were on hand to see Baz run out in 1s for his 100th grade game and were on hand later when he was presented his commemorative cap and embroidered vest. "Disappointing result for sure but personally it was a great day," he said. Baz at least had a win the following day. He sold a pair of Steve "Beaver Menzies' boots from the 2007 NRL grand final for $250 via Facebook years after winning them in a Harbord Devils raffle. |

If Mrs Fillets asked us to assemble the cobweb cabinet above, it would have taken until the end of the decade and ended up looking like a game of pick-up sticks. Not so our very talented volunteer Danny Hogan. We are told "Rowdy" has always been good with his hands – and here's the proof. He knocked this trophy cabinet together in an afternoon after scouring Bunnings and IKEA for the materials, which include wheels so it can be transported in and out of the 1883 Club on game day. It will house the Bayfield Cup for another 12 months, along with our other silverware, after we took it up to Rat Park on a one-day loan last Saturday week. We asked Danny for some handyman tips. "Trade secret…it's no big deal," he told us cryptically. It is to those born with two left thumbs! |

We're happy to report long-serving volunteer Ian Bonner is back on his feet and doing fine after a nasty tumble last Saturday. Bonz was on set-up duty at Manly Oval when he lost his balance near the scoreboard and ended up with a nasty cut to his lip. He was also suffering pins and needles in both arms so fellow volunteer Rob Forsyth did the right thing and called an ambo. We are happy to report Bonz was quickly discharged once tests cleared him of any serious damage. "I've got a sore lip and neck but luckily nothing is broken. Thanks to all those who helped at the time and checked up on me," he told Fillets. "I will be back in action next Saturday." Can’t keep a good man down. |

For the first time in memory, our annual lunch has had the "house full" sign erected well before the day. A record 49 tables have been sold for the event, meaning around 500 guests will converge on the Four Seasons Hotel on Friday week. It was a big call by the board to move the lunch back in the city after many years at the Manly Pacific, but interest levels indicate it was the right one. "It's a phenomenal achievement to sell out this far in advance," president Matt Curll said. "I must pay tribute to the lunch committee, as well as events director John Gorton, match day manager Prue Berne and colts mums Lynette Cummins, Jacqui Hayes and Kylie Long, for all their hard work in ensuring we reached capacity. "Thanks also to those who bought tickets and contributed raffle and auction prizes. "It should be a great day." Fillets had a sneak peek at the menu and can tell you it looks great, as does the beer and wine package. The Four Seasons has reserved the Grain Bar downstairs for the post-lunch kick-on. We're counting the sleeps… |

Long before Marlins Fillets was a thing, there was a Manly rugby newsletter penned by a young schoolboy dreaming of a career in journalism. Dean Ritchie was an aspiring journo in his last year at Killarney High – and playing colts for Manly - when he sat for an interview with publicity officer Donny Maxwell and was handed the job of covering the Blues' news from the 1986 season. "Bulldog" was going through some old scrapbooks during the week and came across one of his early newsletters. It featured news of Manly's 23-6 loss to Randwick, with young English import Clive Woodward putting in a "sparkling" performance for the Blues. There were also reports from the junior reps and the North Shore schools comp. "Bulldog" has gone on to forge a successful career covering rugby league for The Daily Telegraph, but keeps a close eye on the Marlins while following Forest in the first division subbies comp. And he never misses an edition of Fillets! |

Congratulations to assistant first grade coach Sam Lane and wife Addy following the birth of son Beau on Sunday. The young fella showed impeccable timing, arriving the day after dad wound up a busy day of coaching duties at Manly Oval. He joins the growing Lane clan, with big brother Banks besotted by the new addition. Congratulations from all of us at the Marlins. |

The Sydney Rugby Union is investigating an alleged breach of the Shute Shield rules, which could result in one club copping a heavy deduction of competition points. We won't out the club here but the allegations are serious and rivals are demanding strong action if they are found guilty. Gordon was last month deducted two competition points for fielding an unregistered player but their breach is said to be at the low-end of the scale compared to the allegations being levelled at this latest club. Whichever way it goes, look for all hell to break loose once the gavel drops. |
