President Matt Curll officially launched our 2025 season with a gathering of around 150 players, officials, life members, volunteers and fans at Felons Brewery last Sunday. The prez name checked Manly – the place, not the club – and spoke about its origins and how the name described the local indigenous tribe as seen through the eyes of Captain Arthur Phillip in 1778. "When we're down at Manly Oval, I expect us to also stand tall, proud and with resilience like those First Nations people," Curlly told the crowd. "I expect when the Gordon Highlanders or the Norths Shoremen or the latte-sipping Easts Beasties – or, more importantly, the dirty Rats up the road – turn up to our ground, we really live up to that, whether you're a Mermaid or a Marlin. "That's our mantra for the year." Curll then went on to speak about the importance of the club to the local community. "It is the heartbeat of the area. It extends from life members, people who fought in the war, people involved in the surf club, people from local businesses, people coming from overseas to God's country, as we call it, and people who are fortunate enough to live and bring up their families here," he continued. "We're really grateful to the supporters, members, sponsors and volunteers. "And I'm really excited about the year ahead, so grab your family and friends and get down to Manly Oval. "Let's create some energy because we want to see big crowds down there and see everybody having a great day." The audience also heard some great insights from Mermaids' head coach Ben Tuipulotu and skipper Nata Kilisimasi, Colts boss Ed Morgan, and, to round things off, a lively Q&A between the filter-free Phil Reber and men's coach Sam Lane. If Reebs' passion is anything to go by, Manly Oval will be rocking this winter. |

The dress rehearsals are now done and it's time to get down to business as we count off the days until our first Shute Shield game of the year. Head coach Sam Lane has left his players some homework but has otherwise granted them their last rugby-free weekend for a while as the focus turns to Northern Suburbs at Manly Oval on April 5. Lane told Fillets there were at least half the run-on positions unsettled in his mind after the Marlins finished off pre-season trials with an impressive hit-out against Randwick last Saturday. "It was a much better performance than the previous week. Importantly, we learned our lessons and the discipline improved and the lineout functioned better," he said. "We were still a little inaccurate at the breakdown but it was nice to see them respond and put together some footy we can build on. "The first half we played pretty well and were up reasonable comfortably at 4 tries to 1 and we were able to give a lot of guys a run in the second half, which gives guys exposure and builds depth. "I've got some really big and good selection headaches, especially in the backrow and centres." Make sure to secure your seat for the season opener against Norths right here: https://manlyrugby.iwannaticket.com.au/event/manly-marlins-vs-northern-suburbs-MzI5MTU |

Mermaids coach Ben Tuipulotu will lead a squad of 30 players into camp this weekend, giving them one final chance to fine-tune physically and mentally before the season kicks off on April 12. Ben is rapt with the top side's trial form – three wins and no points conceded – and is more than happy with the progress of our new second XV team. He hopes the camp at Bents Basin, on the Nepean River, will further cement the bond his players have built over the summer. "It's a chance for the girls to get to know each other better as teammates and sisters," he explained. "To have that connection off the field is vital for what we want to achieve on the field. "It's a time to reflect and get to know more about each other and see what works for them, what doesn’t. "For the older mermaids, it's the chance to take the younger girls under their wings, guide them, help them, and let them know they have their backs." A series of activities will be rolled out over the weekend, with the club's excellent welfare officer, Alisha Reber, joining the camp on Saturday to interact with the girls. As usual, skipper Nata Kilisimasi (pictured) will be leading the way. Ben said: "Some girls have never experienced camping before so this will be an eye-opener for them and an experience they will never forget." |

Want to feel old in less than 10 seconds? Then read on. Of the 182 players currently registered at Manly, guess how many were born before the year 2000. Just 17. Now, where did we park the mobility scooter? |

The RATT (Room at the Top), the 200 Club, the 1883 Club – the function room at the top of the Manly Oval dressing rooms has had a few name changes over the years. As we prepare to host our first home game of the year, we can reveal that this year the area will be known as the 1883 Felons Lounge. Three lucky fans have won double passes worth more than $400 to participate in our corporate hospitality for three home games. Simon Osburn, David Guthrie, and Leonie Morgan automatically entered the draw for the passes after signing up for early bird memberships before the end of last year. Thanks all three for the support and enjoy club rugby's best hospitality experience. |

While we’re on the subject of hospitality… After experimenting with hosting post-match functions at the Manly Oval function room last year, we can report festivities will return to our great friends at the Manly Bowling Club this season. Marlins management reviewed all aspects of match day operations over the off-season and decided it best to have all players, fans and officials under the one roof once first grade has finished. Disciples of the post-game speeches and boat race will be in heaven. |

Fillets was enjoying some time away up the NSW north coast this week when Mrs Fillets came across a copy of The Tweed Coast Times' real estate pages. Initially fearing she was eyeing some Bondi influencer's Byron Bay $15m pad in the for-sale section, Mrs F – much to our relief – instead pointed to a full-page ad and said, 'don’t you know this guy?" And there he was – 1990s part-time model, former Sea Eagle and ex-Manly rugby star Matt Skene. "Skeney" now runs and operates Skene and Co real estate, promising "trusted expertise, integrity and results". The locals reckon he's killing it, which would come as no surprise to those who know the personable Skeney, who we have almost forgiven for spending a couple of years at the Rats. It's always great to see old Marlins doing well away from the footy paddock. |

A former Manly rugby lower grader, post-dinner raconteur and deliverer of Braveheart-style video soliloquies before big games has risked frostbite to bring us this week's Marlins on the Road photo. Donning his trust Marlins cap, Danny Boland trekked to base camp in the freezing Himalayas to have his picture snapped by travelling partner Tim Rigby, an ex-Marlin turned leaguie. It's that sort of dedication we applaud here at Fillets, so please keep them coming in. |
